President George Bush to Attend Opening Ceremony of Beijing Olympics

The White House has confirmed that US President George Bush will attend the opening ceremony at the Beijing Olympics on August 8.

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino issued a statement explaining Bush’s stance, “He believes he's going to China to support first and foremost our athletes. He sees this as a sporting competition.”

Several world leaders have announced plans to boycott the opening ceremony due to China’s actions in Tibet and their overall human rights record. UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and German Chancellor Angela Merkel have already announced they would forgo the opening ceremony.
