Ingrid Betancourt Arrives in France, Greeted by President Nicolas Sarkozy

Ingrid Betancourt touched down in France on Friday where she was greeted by President Nicolas Sarkozy and received a hero’s welcome.

After spending more than six years as a hostage of Colombia’s military rebel group FARC Betancourt, along with 14 other hostages, was freed two days ago.

Betancourt met with Colombian President Alvaro Uribe in Bogota shortly after her release and was then reunited with her two children on Thursday as they arrived from France. While born in Colombia Betancourt lived in France for an extensive period of her childhood.

She returned to her homeland later in life and became involved in politics and while campaigning for the presidency in 2002 she was captured by FARC rebels where she remained up to Wednesday.

It had always been one of Sarkozy’s promises to work for Betancourt’s freedom and news of her release brought widespread celebration throughout the country. She will attend an official ceremony with Sarkozy at the Elysee Palace later in the day.
