Crowdfunding News (A Kind of Fast Cash You Need To Know About)!
"Is it a scheme, or just sound business?"...
Crowdfunding is the newest "investment scheme" to hit the 'net, but with the rash of success stories flooding the top Crowdfunding sites, I was left with the question... "Is it a scheme, or just sound business?"...
The Internet is packed with "Get rich quick" offers, so it's refreshing and a little exciting to look at sites like IndieGoGo.com and Kickstarter.com - both are crowdfunding platforms that feature low hype examples of regular people getting cash to do cool stuff...
The company I work for, Overcome Everything Inc. has been active in the Internet Marketing space for over 5 years now. We teach email list building - a great tool to increase profits and grow your fan base...
But when we stumbled upon crowdfunding, we set aside some time to thoroughly research this new phenomenon to see if it stands up to the test...
Here's what we did:
My boss, Tellman Knudson was gearing up for a run across the country barefoot as a massive PR stunt / fundraising mission for homeless youth. Great project to be a part of.
Knowing the promises of crowdfunding, we decided to see if we could successfully fund a documentary of his run. So, we popped up a project description on one of the major crowdfunding platforms and started promoting it to our friends, family, customers, and anyone who would take a few minutes to check it out.
What we found was shocking.
With the hope of raising $6,000.00 through crowdfunding to pay for a professional editor to put together the movie, we were hoping and praying that we'd at least hit our goal, so we'd know that crowdfunding was "for real" (we desperately wanted it to be, after all, it's an exciting new development in Internet fundraising)
When all was said and done and our crowdfunding project had run it's course, we were thrilled to see not just the $6,000 we'd hoped for, but a whopping $6,911.01 sitting in the donations bin.
Now, let me give you a quick run-down on how this crowdfunding project worked:
First, we decided on a crowdfunding idea that had a broad appeal, namely, a documentary about this crazy barefoot run...
Then, we decided on an amount to shoot for. If we picked too small an amount, it wouldn't be a real test of crowdfunding... On the other hand, if we shot too high we risked not hitting our crowdfunding goal, and not really knowing if it would have worked had we been less ambitious.
$6,000.00 seemed like the right amount. Just high enough that it would be a challenge, not so high that it would be impossible.
Then, we posted our crowdfunding "project" online, and included in it a list of cool prizes people could win if they donated certain amounts. Think of it like a telethon - if you give $20.00 you get the tote, $50.00 you get the football phone, $500.00 and you get the signed guitar from last week's KISS concert.
Our crowdfunding prizes were mostly related to the project, and included DVD's, producer credits in the finished product, etc.
Then, we reached out to anyone who might be interested in contributing to help make the film happen. We sent out emails to friends, family, customers, and followers - we posted links and teaser text on Facebook and Twitter, and we even got in touch with running communities and barefoot runners, to let them know what we were trying to pull off, and show them how to get involved with our crowdfunding project.
Did it take work?
Yes, but not as much as we expected.
What's really astonishing to me is how often other crowdfunding projects get "overfunded" like ours did. Just like any fundraiser, there's no limit on how much, or how little you can make - it's all up to the people you approach, and how relevant your crowdfunding project is to their interests.
If you've got a crazy project, a burning passion or a great idea that you just don't have the dough to pull off, I highly suggest you grab the free interview on the next page about crowdfunding. It could easily supply you with the resources, knowledge, and tricks you need to pull off a successful crowdfunding project of your own...
