Jesse Helms, Former Senator, Dies at 86

Former Senator Jesse Helms died on the Fourth of July of natural causes. Helms died in Raleigh, North Carolina at 1:15 a.m. He was 86.

 

Helms began as a newspaper and television commentator in North Carolina. In 1972 he won election to the Senate and stayed in office until 2002, when he decided not to run. 

 

He had a history of health problems including a bone disorder, prostate cancer and vascular dementia. During the last years of his career, Helms rode a motorized scooter through the Capitol.

 

Funeral arrangements are pending.
