Italian Government Declares “State of Emergency” to Save Ancient City of Pompeii

The Italian government, in an effort to restore and preserve the architecture and artifacts of the ancient city of Pompeii, has declared a “state of emergency.”

A special commission is expected to handle funds and oversee the refurbishing of the city that fell to a cataclysmic volcanic eruption in 79AD. It would be another 1700 years before the city was rediscovered but now experts believe continued neglect and vandalism could destroy what remains.

Pompeii remains one of the most visited tourist sites in Italy.
