Santa Barbara County Wildfires Spread, Thousands of Homes Threatened in California Blazes

The California wildfires continue to feed off of the dry land and strong winds and now Santa Barbara County is faced with a blaze that threatens to destroy thousands of homes that lay in its path.

More than 1,700 residents of Goleta were ordered to evacuate their homes after a the flames became so intense firefighters were forced to take cover.

Firefighters have been at the mercy of strong wind gusts and the parched land that has fed the fires constant assault. Many of the wildfires now being battled have been ignited by lightning strikes that have evolved into raging infernos.

The Goleta fire was said to be about 15 percent contained but another bad night could change matters for the worse.

At Big Sur, site of yet another massive wildfire, firefighters continued to fight to save homes in the scenic community north of San Francisco. Earlier this week more than 1,500 residents were ordered to evacuate as the flames inched their way closer.

The Big Sur wildfires have already consumed more than 100 square miles and claimed 20 homes.
