South African President Thabo Mbeki has reportedly travelled to Zimbabwe and met with President Robert Mugabe and members of an opposition faction in hopes of creating a government of unity in the troubled African country.
Mbeki has taken the lead in talks concerning Zimbabwe and the controversial run-off election that took place June 27. In that vote Mugabe ran unopposed after main opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai removed himself from the election amid concerns of violence.
Mugabe has ruled Zimbabwe since the country won its independence from Britain in 1980 and during the recent presidential election he remarked he would never allow Tsvangirai to take the presidency.
The meeting with Mbeki, Mugabe and members of an opposition faction did not include members of Tsvangirai’s Movement for Democratic Change party.
