Prison Riot in Syria Leave Scores Dead

A prison riot in Syria has left an estimated 25 dead and several injured after military police fired live ammunition at Islamist inmates.

Trouble had been brewing for several weeks at the jail located outside Damascus after prisoners had complained about conditions.

The tension spilled over into violence after early morning raids triggered gunfire. The mainly Islamist and political prisoners tried to flee from the military police but many were cut down by the bullets.

Syrian authorities have not released a statement regarding the shootings.

A posting on the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights demanded “that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad intervenes immediately to stop this massacre."
