At least Eight Dead, Five Still Missing in Canoe Tragedy

At least eight people were killed and another five remain missing after two canoes were crushed while running over a dam in southeast Slovenia.

After the accident three of the victims managed to swim ashore but two died shortly after. Divers had pulled six bodies from the Sava River and continue to search for the other five.

The accident occurred late Thursday when the members of the trip opted to pass over the dam that was still under construction.  When the two canoes hit the whitewater passing near the gates of the dam their canoes were smashed sending the occupants into the water. They were then sucked by the rapids into the underwater tunnel that lead to the generator turbines.

This was to be the last time canoes had the opportunity to pass through that stretch of the Sava River as workers continued construction on the hydroelectric plant.
