Two Retired Generals Among Those Arrested in Suspected Coup Plot in Turkey

Two retired military generals were among the 21 in custody in what Turkish officials believe was a plot to overthrow the government.

Both Sener Eruygur and Hursit Tolon have denied any wrongdoing yet they have been involved with anti-government demonstrations in the past.

Turkish police launched a large scale sweep last Tuesday and took into custody the suspected members of the nationalist group known as Ergenekon. Police had been watching the group for more than a year after they were linked to an explosives find in Istanbul.

According to Turkish media outlets, Tuesday’s raids produced documents that outlined several illegal protests as well as assassinations and combat with security forces.
