Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard will start a rehab assignment Friday with the club's Class-A affiliate in Lakewood, according to Associated Press.
The All-Star slugger has been sidelined with a sprained left ankle since Aug. 2, while sliding into second base at Washington.
Barring any setbacks, Howard will play at Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Saturday and could rejoin Philadelphia on Monday.
Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, was batting .292 with 23 homers and a NL-leading 81 RBIs when he got hurt. He was in a 0-for-14 batting slump at the time of the injury.
Howard is the 15th Phillies player to go on the disabled list this season. Shane Victorino and Chase Utley are also sidelined.
