Israel and Hezbollah Sign Formal Deal for Prisoner Exchange

Israel and Lebanese militant group Hezbollah have signed a formal agreement on Monday to excahneg prisoners. The agreement was signed in the presence of a UN representative.

As part of the deal Israel would receive soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev while Israel would hand over the bodies of several Hezbollah fighters who had been killed over the years.

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has expressed his belief that Goldwasser and Regev were dead yet Hezbollah has never confirmed that fact. The two were taken captive in 2006, a move that sparked a 34-day war between the two sides.

Hezbollah has also agreed to provide information about missing Israeli airman Ron Arad while Samir Qantar, who has sat inside an Israeli jail since 1979, will be among the Lebanese prisoners freed.

Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to the prisoner swap a week ago but it wasn’t until Monday that they formally agreed to the details.
