The violence in Zimbabwe has continued despite the June 27 election that kept President Robert Mugabe in office for yet another term.
Opposition leaders have claimed several people have been killed and scores are missing after armed militias raided two camps housing people fleeing the constant violence. Many of those in the camps had sought refuge at the South African embassy and took up residence inside the camps as a last resort to avoiding violence.
A camp in Rura, located just outside the capital city of Harare, was raided by masked men who roughed up many inside the camp. As many as eight people were hospitalized after the attack and at least 14 remain missing.
Several people taking refuge at a camp in Gokwe were said to have been killed.
The violence continues to drive a wedge between Mugabe’s ZANU-PF party and the main opposition Movement for Democratic Change party. The international community has called for a power-sharing government to run Zimbabwe yet Mugabe has shown little willingness to bring that into a reality.
MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said there would be no room for talk as long as the violence continues. According to the MDC more than 100 supporters have been killed and more than 5,000 remain missing since elections began in March.
Tsvangirai pulled out of the June 27 run-off election due to the continued violence and belief that a free and fair election was impossible to realize.
