Church of England to Allow Women Bishops

The Church of England has broke form tradition and voted to ordain women as bishops, a move that has upset many inside the Church.

In a ruling made by the General Synod the Church would now open its doors to women bishops while still trying to maintain a code of practice that would appease opponents of the move.

Despite the move to reassure opponents the General Synod elected to forgo particular demands that included male “super-bishops” and the creation of new dioceses that mirrored tradition for objectors.

Several clergy had threatened to leave the Church if women were allowed to be ordained as bishops yet the General Synod continued its move towards a more inclusive institution. In 1994 they approved their first ordination of women as priests.

While the General Synod approved a code of practice that served to reassure opponents the nature of those codes has yet to be revealed.
