Judge Dismisses Case Claiming NY Authorities Denied Proper Buries for 9/11 Victims

A lawsuit claiming the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York were denied a proper burial by the city of New York has been dismissed by a district judge.

The lawsuit claimed that after the World Trade Center attacks the city wrongfully carried debris from the site and transported it to a dump. According to the relatives of the victims the debris may have contained the remains of their loved ones.

District Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled that the city had “acted responsibly” in the aftermath of the attacks and noted “Plaintiffs have no property right in an undifferentiated, unidentifiable mass of dirt that may or may not contain the remains of plaintiffs' loved ones.”

The plaintiffs had wanted the debris to be transported to a new area that could be created into a cemetery.
