Ingrid Betancourt Receives Standing Ovation in French Senate

Ingrid Betancourt, freed after more than six years as a hostage in Colombia, received a standing ovation from French lawmakers Tuesday.

Betancourt was greeted by the president of the French Senate, Christian Poncelet, who encouraged others in the auditorium to stand for the French-Colombian who was rescued from FARC leftist rebels who abducted her in 2002.

Poncelet voiced what many in France have come to feel for Betancourt, saying her courage and tenacity were an inspiration.

Of her rescue, Betancourt has said, “What I am living is a miracle.”
