The Gaffiere and the Lauzon rivers were contaminated when 7,925 gallons of liquid containing uranium overflowed a reservoir at the Tricastin nuclear facility, about 25 miles from the city of
Authorities say the liquid is toxic, but only slightly radioactive, and have banned the use of water from the rivers along with the consumption of well water in three towns located along the waterways.
According to one nuclear safety agency, uranium concentrations in the Gaffiere were 1,000 times the normal levels but were dropping rapidly.
Although the cause of the accident is under investigation, local officials say the leak may have occurred during the cleaning of a waste-water tank.
