G-8 Leaders Reject Legitimacy of Mugabe Election

World leaders attending the G-8 summit in Japan have rejected the legitimacy of Robert Mugabe’s election as president of Zimbabwe, citing the violence and intimidation that prompted the opposition candidate to withdraw from the race.

Leaders of the Group of Eight industrial powers warned they will take financial and other measures against those people responsible for violence, and recommended a UN special envoy.

G-8 leaders have called for officials in Zimbabwe to work towards a peaceful resolution to the political crisis that has gripped that country.
