Police Chief Joel Ortega was the first to be forced out of office after a report alleging official misconduct in the June 20 raid in which three police and nine club patrons were killed. Ortega, who has not been charged with any crime, was ousted after facing harsh criticism for the way his office handled the raid.
The raid on the News Divine nightclub began when officers went to the club looking for underage drinkers. During the raid, officers blocked the club’s only exit, creating a deadly stampede in which 12 people were asphyxiated or crushed to death.
Thirty-nine police officers and the club’s owner have been charged in the case. The precinct police chief who led the raid faces 12 counts of homicide.
