Jailed Polygamist Leader Warren Jeffs Hospitalized

Jailed polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs has been hospitalized in Las Vegas. Authorities have not revealed the reason behind Jeffs hospitalization.

“I can’t tell you why he was brought here or what his condition is,” says Las Vegas police officer Jose Montoya.

The 52-year-old was taken from an Arizona jail to Las Vegas’s Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center on Tuesday. He is awaiting trial on 10 felony charges of sexual conduct with a minor, incest, and conspiracy to commit sexual conduct with a minor.

Jeffs, the leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was sentenced in November to two consecutive terms of five years to life in prison after being convicted of two counts of being an accomplice to rape. The charges stemmed from a marriage her performed in 2001.

While awaiting sentencing on the rape-accomplice charges, Jeffs attempted to commit suicide by hanging himself in his cell. He also refused to eat or drink and developed ulcers on his knees from praying for hours.
