US Consulate in Istanbul Attacked, Three Policemen Killed

An attack just outside the US consulate in Istanbul has left three policemen and three gunmen dead in what is being called “an obvious act of terrorism.”

One of the gunmen approached a police officer while concealing his weapon and then shot him in the head, setting off a gun battle between the three attackers and security forces.

The officer shot in the head died at the scene while the two other officers died at a nearby hospital. All three attackers were believed to be killed at the scene.

At least one other police officer was injured and the driver of a tow truck was injured as well. Police officers are still searching for a driver who dropped off the three gunmen.

Ross Wilson, US ambassador to Turkey, identified the attackers as “terrorists who carried out a cowardly and dastardly attack.”
