Five Peacekeepers Killed in Northern Darfur, 18 Wounded and 17 Missing

Five peacekeepers were killed, 18 wounded and another 17 remain missing after a massive convoy of gunmen ambushed the individuals in northern Darfur on Tuesday.

The peacekeepers, part of a joint U.N.-African Union mission, were part of the 9,000 soldiers and police officers who had been assigned to stabilize the troubled Darfur region in Sudan.

According to reports the gunmen, traveling in about 40 SUVs, overwhelmed the peacekeepers. Three of those killed were from Rwanda, one was from Ghana and the fifth from Uganda.
