U.S. Senate Passes Bill Protecting Phone Companies from Wiretap Program

U.S. President George Bush earned a big victory on Wednesday as the Senate passed a bill that will protect telephone companies that took part in a wiretap program designed to catch conversations regarding potential terrorist attacks.

The bill had passed the House of Representatives last month and Bush strongly urged the Senate to follow suit.

Several telephone companies had been asked to participate in the controversial program that did not require a warrant. When news of the program was revealed many Democrats criticized the phone companies for taking part and felt they should face prosecution for taking part in the surveillance.

Not only did the bill provide immunity to those telephone companies that took part in the government’s program but also granted the government to continue the program.
