Brazil Rejects Proposal to Reform Abortion Law

Brazilian MPs, Ministério Público, have rejected an abortion reform proposal backed by the government, opting to maintain the country’s strict laws banning the procedure except in cases of rape or when the woman’s life is in danger.

Brazil is home to the largest population of Roman Catholics and the decision to reject the abortion reform was seen as another victory for the Church.

Abortion is a crime that could be punished with jail time yet an estimated one million Brazilian women a year undergo the procedure.
