Japanese Engineer Worked Himself to Death According to Ruling

In a ruling issued by the Japanese labor bureau the official cause of death of a man who regularly put in extended hours and faced tremendous pressure as a Toyota car engineer was overwork.

The ruling, handed down on June 30 by the labor bureau, means his family will now be able to collect benefits.

Under intense pressure to produce a hybrid version of his company’s Camry, the man regularly averaged 80 hours of overtime per month and worked weekends. He was under considerable strain trying to figure out how to ship a version of his model to the North American Auto Show in Detroit when he died in January 2006.

The 45-year-old collapsed in his home after suffering from ischemic heart disease, a malady related to his workload.

Death from overwork has steadily risen in Japan and the country’s Health Ministry has attempted to put into place measures that would help companies monitor their employees’ health.
