Stocks Are Mixed Amid Concerns About Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac
A rise in techs and Dow Chemical’s decision to buy Rohm and Haas are helping stocks overcome rising crude prices and their impact on retailers and another batch of bad news in the banking sector. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are under very heavy pressure after sobering comments about the solvency of the two government-sponsored enterprises, while a profit warning from Wachovia is sending the S&P Banking Index to a fresh 12-year low. In other news, Wal-Mart posted strong same-store sales, while jobless claims fell more than forecast due to difficulties in making seasonal adjustments.
In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 34.44, or 0.31 percent, to 11,113.00.
Broader stock indicators were mixed. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 5.96, or 0.48 percent, to 1,238.73, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 1.92, or 0.09 percent, to 2,236.81.
Oil rose $1.65 to $137.70 a barrel.
