Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones was arrested early Thursday and charged with felony possession of cocaine.
A police report says officers approached a white Toyota 4Runner, which was parked in an unlit portion of the parking lot of Ryleigh's Sports & More. The officer found Jones inside, using a credit card to cut up a white substance, which they assumed was cocaine. Police say an officer drew his handgun after Jones did not immediately show his hands.
Police say they found a jar with possible marijuana residue inside the car and a plastic bag of what was likely cocaine. Officers say Jones admitted he had cocaine. Six grams of cocaine were discovered inside the vehicle.
Jones, 25, has a hearing scheduled in Washington County (Ark.) Circuit Court on July 11. He is currently being held in the Washington County Detention Center.
Former University of Arkansas tight end Jared Hicks, 25, and Benjamin Cook, 26, were both in the car. Hicks and Cook were charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor.
Hicks is scheduled for an August 8 hearing in Fayetteville District Court. His bond was set at $500.
Jones was drafted with the 21st pick in the 2005 NFL Draft by the Jaguars after a successful career at the University of Arkansas. Jones made the switch to wide receiver from being a dual-threat quarterback for the Razorbacks. Last season, Jones caught 24 passes for 317 yards and four touchdowns.
The arrest came just hours before Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver announced that he is not putting the team up for sale.
"I must once again reiterate the fact that I am not selling the Jaguars," Weaver said Thursday. "The team is not for sale, and I cannot say it any more clearly than that. I'm not going to speculate about the future. Whatever happens in the future, the Jaguars will be the Jacksonville Jaguars."
The Philadelphia Daily News reported that Weaver was negotiating to sell the Jaguars to billionaire C. Dean Metropoulos, who might consider moving the team to Los Angeles.
Metropoulos, the former chairman and chief executive officer of New Jersey-based Pinnacle Foods, also denied the report.
