Ousted Thai Prime Minister to Face New Charges of Corruption

Former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will face another round of legal battles as prosecutors file new corruption charges Friday alleging he abused his position of authority in order to benefit his family business.

Charges filed in Thailand’s Supreme Court claim Thaksin ordered a change in concession fees paid to the state by mobile phone companies, reducing them into a much lower simple tax.

Thaksin’s family-owned telecom conglomerate benefitted the most from the change. As the largest mobile phone company, Advanced Info Service had been paying the largest concession fees.

Ousted in a 2006 military coup, Thaksin and members of his family have 24 legal cases pending ranging from tax evasion to land fraud. Eight cases have gone to trial so far.
