Stocks Are Sharply Lower Amid Growing Concerns About Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

 

Growing fears about the stability of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are casting a dark shadow over the market, while a $5 per barrel spike in crude is adding to the bearish mood. Meanwhile, General Electric matched the Street’s profit estimate and reaffirmed full-year guidance, Citigroup will sell its German consumer division, and InBev is reportedly set to raise its bid on Anheuser-Busch.

 

In early morning trade, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 131.41, or 1.17 percent, to 11,097.61.

Broader stock indexes are lower. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 12.64, or 1.01 percent, to 1,240.75, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 26.66, or 1.18 percent, to 2,231.19.

 

Light, sweet crude rose $4.90 to $146.55 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange amid tensions over Iran's launch of test missiles and the possible renewal of oil-related violence in Nigeria.

 

Bond prices fell. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, rose to 3.84 percent from 3.80 percent late Thursday.

 

The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold prices rose.
