Despite a tumultuous relationship that has brought their two countries to the brink of military action Colombia President Alvaro Uribe and Venezuela President Hugo Chavez are to meet on Friday in an effort to repair ties between the nations.
Issues between the two leaders almost came to a head in March when Colombia launched an attack on FARC base that was stationed in Ecuador. That attack resulted in the death of a high ranking militant rebel but also drew the condemnation of Chavez.
The Venezuelan leader accused Colombia of violating Ecuador’s sovereignty and quickly marched troops to the border. Uribe claimed Chavez’s reaction had more to do with his close alliance with FARC rebels and alleged he had funded the militants.
Now the two sides appear to be ready to bury the hatchet as they recognize the economic benefit of a more stable relationship. Many believe the two countries are interdependent and without an understanding both could face serious economic trouble.
