Russia Accuses British Embassy Official of Espionage

Chris Bowers, acting head of U.K. Trade and Investment at the British Embassy, was first accused Thursday when a news agency reported Russia’s secret service believed Bowers to be a senior British intelligence officer.

The Interfax news agency also reported Bowers worked as a spy “under the cover of a BBC correspondent in Tashkent,” Uzbekistan, in the 1990s. A spokesman for the BBC confirmed Bowers worked as a freelance reporter in Tashkent during that time.

Britain’s Federal Security Service and Foreign Ministry both refused to comment on the allegations.
