Zimbabwe Hails Failure of U.N. Security Council to Implement News Sanctions

Despite having the support of nine council members the U.N. Security Council failed to impose new sanctions against Zimbabwe, its president, Robert Mugabe and several of his chief allies after Russia and China voted to veto the measure.

Both Russia and China are permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and a veto from any member automatically defeats a resolution. The two dissenting countries argued that Zimbabwe posed no threat to international security.

The resolution had been drafted following Zimbabwe’s recent presidential election in which Mugabe retained his post. Mugabe ran unopposed after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the race declaring the election would not be free and fair.

Zimbabwe officials welcomed the defeat of the resolution; a measure they claimed was an attempt to make the people of Zimbabwe suffer.

Zimbabwe's Information Minister Sikhanyiso Ndlovu talked about the defeat stating, “We... would like to thank those who helped defeat international racism disguised as multilateral action at the UN.”
