Syria and Lebanon Agree to Open Embassies

Following talks held by French President Nicolas Sarkozy both Syria and Lebanon have agreed to open embassies in each other’s capitals.

Syria and Lebanon have not had diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level since 1943, the year Lebanon became independent. Their relationship took a further hit in 2005 when Lebanon’s PM Rafiq Hariri was assassinated. Despite denying any involvement Lebanon held the belief that Syria played a role in the murder.

Sarkozy had been working to bring the two countries together and met with Lebanon’s President Michel Suleiman and Syria’s Bashar Assad in Paris.

Following his meetings with Suleiman and Assad and announcement was made by Sarkozy in which the plans for diplomatic ties were r-established, “I would like to say what a historic step forward it is for France that Syrian President Bashar Assad is determined to open a diplomatic representation in Lebanon, and that Lebanon should open a diplomatic representation in Syria.”
