Barack Obama Criticized for Planned Speech at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate

Barack Obama has been criticized by a number of German politicians for his planned speech at a Cold War landmark when he visits Europe and the Middle East in late July.

Obama has tentative plans to hold a speech at Brandenburg Gate, a significant reminder to Germans of their past division and eventual reunification.

The idea that Obama would hold a speech at such a symbolic landmark has angered many politicians in Germany. Erwin Huber, leader of the Christian Social Union, felt the honor to speak at the site should not be bestowed upon Obama stating, “Obama didn't do anything for German unification.”

German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Obama’s site selection “a bit odd” and had said earlier this week that the Brandenburg Gate should not be used for what she called “electioneering.”

In 1987 US President Ronald Reagan used the site as a backdrop when he called upon the Soviet Union to tear down the Berlin Wall.
