Police Kill Gunman Who Hijacked Bus

Police shot and killed a gunman who hijacked a bus in the Philippines on Monday. The ordeal began when ex-police officer Rolando Mendoza boarded a tourist bus in Manila armed with an M-16 rifle and small arms and took all 24 passengers and the bus driver hostage.

Police say Mendoza was demanding his job back. He was fired from the police force earlier this year for extortion.

Police cordoned off the area around the bus and tried to negotiate. Mendoza released 9 of the hostages and the bus driver before police stormed the bus. Mendoza was shot and killed. At least 4 hostages are alive and at least 2 are dead.

The situation lasted about 10 hours. Authorities have not confirmed the number of hostages that survived.
