Workers trapped in a copper and gold mine in northern Chile since August 5 are still alive. The miners tied a hand-written message to a probe authorities lowered in to the San Esteban mine on Sunday. The message was written in Spanish and said, “We are fine in the shelter, the 33 of us.”
Rescue teams are now working to send food, medicine, flashlights and other necessities to the miners. They also plan to send microphones down to learn more about the workers’ conditions.
The men are believed to be trapped in a small shelter 2,300 feet underground. The shelter probably contained some water, food and other supplies.
Officials say it could take as long as 4 months to free the miners because of the depth of the mine and the process of drilling another shaft.
The San Esteban mine is located in the Atacama region in northern Chile.
