Alaskan Volcano Erupts, Sends Nearby Residents Fleeing

The Okmok Caldera, located on a remote island in Alaska, erupted late Saturday morning causing an ash cloud as high as 50,000 feet and sending resident of a nearby private ranch running for shelter from falling ash and rock.

Seismologists had little warning of Okmok Caldera’s eruption on Umnak Island and could do little to warn the nine people who were on the private ranch at Fort Glenn six miles from the volcano.

All nine people, including three children, escaped harm and were able to contact authorities using a satellite phone. Members of the Coast Guard were sent to rescue the residents but had to use a cutter because the falling debris could be problematic for a helicopter.

The last time the 3,500-foot Okmok Caldera erupted was 1997.
