Bobby Murcer, the former New York Yankees great, died on Saturday due to complications from brain cancer. Murcer was 62.
Murcer spent 17 seasons as a major league baseball player, most of those seasons played in a New York Yankees uniform. Over the course of his career Murcer hit .277 with 252 home runs and 1,043 RBIs. He was also a member of the All-Star team on five occasions and won a Gold Glove as an outfielder.
The beloved Murcer debuted for the Yankees in 1965 as a 19-year-old rookie and remained in pinstripes through the 1974 season, taking two seasons off to serve in the U.S. Army in 1967-68. He was traded to the Giants for several seasons and moved on to the Cubs before landing back in a Yankees uniform in 1979 and retired in 1983.
After retiring, Murcer headed to the broadcast booth for the Yankees and quickly became a fan favorite in that post and won three Emmy Awards for live sports coverage.
Murcer had been diagnosed with a brain tumor on Christmas Eve 2006 and after surgery doctors determine the cancerous tumor was malignant.
