Israeli and Palestinian Leaders Optimistic about Peace as Union for the Mediterranean Summit Kicks Off

Israeli and Palestinian leaders have declared they could be on the brink of a lasting peace agreement as the Union for the Mediterranean kicked off its first summit in Paris. The Union for the Mediterranean will be co-hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Nearing the top of the list will be a lasting peace between Israel and their Palestinian neighbors, an agreement that Israeli PM Ehud Olmert believes has never been so close. A belief that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas shares. Both Olmert and Abbas have said they were making headway to diplomacy.

Sarkozy has played an integral role in fostering peace in the Middle East and has long desired to bring Israelis and Palestinians to the table. The French President has said Europe could do more to foster peace in the Middle East and has encouraged other EU members to play an active part in the process.

The Union for the Mediterranean will bring together 43 leaders and consist of EU, North African and Middle Eastern states. They are scheduled to discuss investment, trade and environmental projects as well as peace initiatives.
