26 Killed in Pakistan Mosque Bombing

A teenage suicide bomber entered a mosque in northwest Pakistan Monday and detonated his explosives, killing 26 people and leaving 30 others injured.

Among the dead was Mullah Noor Muhammad, a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly from 1997 to 1999. Government officials believe Muhammad was the target of the attack. According to reports, the suicide bomber detonated while shaking Muhammad’s hand. Muhammad had just finished delivering a speech at the mosque.

The mosque is located in Wana, a town in South Waziristan. Muhammad, who was a Taliban supporter, ran several bookstores and hospitals in the area. In a recent raid on one of his hospitals by Pakistani security forces, three al-Qaeda militants were killed. Al-Qaeda threatened to kill Muhammad after accusing him of giving information to authorities.
