Sudan President Omar al-Bashir Accused of War Crimes

Luis Moreno-Ocampo, prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, has accused Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir of war crimes, alleging the leader was responsible for atrocities that include genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes over the past five years.

Moreno-Ocampo made the allegations before a three-judge panel at The Hague ad it is now up to those judges to determine if an arrest warrant for al-Bashir should be issued.

While al-Bashir is facing the allegations Foreign Ministry spokesman Ali al-Sadig did not appear too concerned with the issue stating, "We consider the indictment of either the president or any other normal citizen of Sudan the same - we don't recognize whatever comes out from the ICC, to us it is non-existent.”

The atrocities tied to al-Bashir relate to the continued violence in Darfur where an estimated 300,000 people have died since 2003. According to Moreno-Ocampo, al-Bashir “masterminded and implemented a plan to destroy in substantial part the Fur, Masalit and Zaghawa groups, on account of their ethnicity.”
