Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela, Crowned Miss Universe 2008

Miss Venezuela Dayan Mendoza, 22, was crowned Miss Universe 2008 on Monday in the pageant held in the seaside town of Nha Trang in Vietnam and hosted by Jerry Springer and Spice Girl Melanie Brown.

The 5-foot, 10-inch Mendoza beat out Miss Mexico, Miss Dominican Republic, Miss Colombia and Miss Russia to earn the crown.

Miss Colombia Taliana Vargas and Mendoza were the final two standing and held hands when the judges made their decision and Venezuela had its first Miss Universe since 1996. Reigning Miss Universe, Japan’s Riyo Mori, placed the crown made of white and yellow gold and adorned with precious stones upon Mendoza’s head.

It was a difficult night for Miss USA Crystle Stewart who followed in the footsteps of last year’s U.S. rep Rachel Smith and tripped on her evening gown and fell to the stage.
