New Yorker Magazine "Tasteless" Cover Riles Up Barack Obama Campaign

The New Yorker Magazine received a lot of controversy Monday after publishing a "tasteless" cover featuring Sen. Barack Obama and his wife Michelle.

The cover illustrates Obama in Muslim garb and wife Michelle carrying a machine gun in the Oval Office. In the background, an American flag is burning in the fireplace with a picture of Osama bin Laden sitting above the mantlepiece. The cover is portrayed in cartoon form.

Obama and his wife are giving each other a "fist bump," a gesture that received a lot of attention after they did it when Obama was officially told that he won the Democratic presidential nomination.

The July 21 cover of the satirical New Yorker, titled “The Politics of Fear,” is intended to be a cartoon parody, but comes across in an insensitive manner.

"I think the idea that the Obamas are branded as unpatriotic [let alone as terrorists] in certain sectors is preposterous," cover artist Barry Blitt wrote in an e-mail to the Huffington Post. "It seemed to me that depicting the concept would show it as the fear-mongering ridiculousness that it is."

The Obama campaign has had to fight an e-mail spam campaign that claims Obama is secretly a Muslim, and his wife is a black radical.

"The New Yorker may think, as one of their staff explained to us, that their cover is a satirical lampoon of the caricature Senator Obama's right-wing critics have tried to create," said Obama campaign spokesperson Bill Burton. "But most readers will see it as tasteless and offensive. And we agree."
