George Bush to Lift Executive Ban on Offshore Oil Drilling

U.S. President George Bush plans to take the first step in opening up the possibility of increased oil production for energy companies when he lifts the executive ban on offshore oil drilling later today.

Bush is expected to make the announcement at 1:30 p.m. ET and while he has been in favor of exploration on the Outer Continental Shelf as a means of bringing down energy costs it would still take an act of Congress for any movement to begin.

Democrats have argued the energy companies already have enough space to explore for oil and more drilling options on the Outer Continental Shelf could pose environmental problems. The Bush administration and many Republicans have argued that advanced drilling technology has virtually guaranteed U.S. shores would be safe from an environmental disaster.
