Nurse Charged with Murder in Deaths of Babies at Romanian Hospital

Prosecutors in Romania have charged a nurse with murder in the deaths of 5 infants that were killed in a fire at a hospital last week. Florentina Daniele Cirstea is accused of not properly supervising the infants in the ICU unit of the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest on August 16.

Cirstea was not in the room when the fire broke out. She left the room unattended for 12 minutes. Five babies died and six others were injured. The injured infants are in critical but stable condition at Grigore Alexandru Children's Hospital. Cirstea is also charged in the injuries of the 6 babies.

Hospital employees discovered the fire and used a chair to break down the door, which could only be opened using an access card. Cirstea was the only person with a card, but was not at the scene when the first was discovered.

Last week authorities said it appears the hospital staff was having a party in another room when the fire started.
