Michelle Obama has reportedly accepted an invitation to become a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., according to reports on Monday.
Obama, the wife of Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama, has not yet been inducted into the sorority known as AKA, but the induction ceremony will reportedly happen later this week.
The announcement was made Sunday in Washington, D.C. during the sorority's centennial Boule', their biennial national meeting.
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was founded in 1908 on the campus of Howard University, becoming the first African-American sorority and first African-American Greek-lettered organization founded on a historically Black college or university.
The AKA Centennial Boule' 2008, which was held in its founding city of Washington, D.C., commemorates 100 years of the organization's existence.
Obama joins a list of famous honorary members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. that includes Maya Angelou, Alicia Keys, Coretta Scott King, Gladys Knight and Rosa Parks.
In her personal life, Obama and her husband were recently featured on a controversial cover of the New Yorker Magazine, which depicted her as a Black nationalist with a rifle. Her husband Barack was dressed in Muslim garb. An American flag was burning in the fire place, while a picture of Osama bin Laden rests above it.
The cartoon New Yorker cover has been lambasted by both sides of the political spectrum as Obama and McCain campaign aides responded negatively to the cover.
