Leaders of Indonesia and East Timor to Acknowledge Crimes Against Humanity

A Truth and Friendship Commission report is expected to lead to formal acknowledgement of crimes against humanity by leaders of Indonesia and East Timor during the 1999 vote for independence in East Timor.

The report refuted Indonesia’s earlier claims that violence and human rights abuses had been random acts committed by individuals. Now Indonesia is ready to step forward and accept responsibility for providing weapons, funding and operational help to stomp out the independence supporters.

In accordance with an agreement between the two countries the Commission report placed the majority of blame on institutions rather than individuals.

The institution found to bear the burden of blame was the Indonesian army which played a roe in the deaths of at last 1,000 people and the torture and rape of countless others.
