Madeleine McCann Suspect Settles Claim Against UK Newspapers

Robert Murat, still an official suspect in Portugal’s investigation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, has settled a claim against 11 UK newspapers who published libelous articles about his involvement in the gripping case.

Madeleine McCann disappeared from her parent’s vacation villa in Portugal in April 2007; just days shy of her fourth birthday, and within two weeks Murat was being questioned by police and soon after named an official suspect.

Murat continued to plead his innocence yet several UK newspapers printed stories insinuating the 34-year-old was connected to McCann.

Murat filed charges against 11 UK newspapers including the Sun, Daily Mail, Metro and News of the World and the case was to go to court on Thursday yet a settlement was reached in which Murat was awarded about £550,000 and an apology.
