Indianapolis Colts star quarterback Peyton Manning underwent a surgical procedure to remove an infected bursa sac in his left knee Monday.
Manning will take the next four to six weeks to recover, according to reports from the Colts organization. Colts training camp begins July 25.
"Peyton had been receiving conservative treatment for an inflamed bursa sac in consultation with the club's medical staff since February 2008. This course of treatment was productive until Peyton experienced increased pain and early signs of infection," said Colts president Bill Polian.
Depending on Manning's recovery, he could possibly miss the Colts' season opener against the Chicago Bears on Sept. 7, their first game in the new Lucas Oil Stadium.
Manning, 32, started 16 games for a 10th consecutive season in 2007, giving him 160 consecutive regular-season starts. He also was selected to the Pro Bowl for the eighth time.
Manning's ailment is called bursitis, the inflammation of the bursa sacs. Bursa are fluid-filled sacs located between a tendon and skin, or between a tendon and bone. The bursa can become inflamed making movement stiff and painful.
