Earthquake Rattles Greek Island

A strong earthquake rattled the Greek island of Rhodes Tuesday morning, and authorities report one woman died while fleeing her home.

Preliminary estimates by the Athens Geodynamic Institute say the quake registered at a magnitude of 6.3, while the U.S. Geological Survey gave it a 6.4. Magnitudes often differ in the first few hours and days after an earthquake.

No major damage was reported to buildings on the island, and an assessment of historical sites and a medieval castle in Rhodes revealed no damage.

Just last month, a 6.5-magnitude earthquake stuck the port city of Patras, Greece, killing two, injuring more than 200 and damaging hundreds of buildings.

Seismic activity is a frequent occurrence in Greece, and rarely causes damage or injuries.
